That’s 1 ha every 5 seconds.

Farmland and soil worn away by wind and water since 1 January, often after forests are cleared or land is overused.

How the numbers work

Earth Stats shows live estimates, not real-time measurements. Almost no organisation counts the world second by second. Instead, we take the latest yearly figure from a published source and spread it evenly over the year, so a number like "births this year" counts up steadily from 1 January. Figures that describe a level, such as people online, start from the source's latest value and move at its recent trend.

That means every live number is an approximation. It can differ from the true value, and it will change when sources publish new data. Each stat on the site names its source and, where it isn't a figure published directly by that source, says how it was produced:

Your Earth uses UN population and births data and NOAA CO₂ records, interpolated between published years, so your personal figures are estimates too.
